John Thomson, born on 14 June 1837 was the head in pioneering photography throughout the 1900. John was born into a family with eight siblings in Edinburgh during the queen Victoria's accession. After leaving school when he was just 13 he became an apprentice of a local optical and scientific instrument manufacturer up until 1858 where he then learned the principles of photography. During his apprenticeship John studied at the Watt Institution and School of Arts which later became Heriot-Watt university.
